Abby McGue: From College Athlete to College Coach
When Abby McGue first joined Aim in high school, she didn’t just learn how to compete — she discovered important values that would guide her in the years to come.
“Aim was pivotal in my field hockey career,” Abby said. “I grew as an athlete and as an individual. I learned about hard work, discipline, and teamwork — lessons that have carried into every other part of my life.”
After playing four years at Concordia University Wisconsin, where she also joined the lacrosse team her senior year, Abby earned her degree in Communications and found herself drawn back to the sport — this time as a coach. She now serves as assistant field hockey coach at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana.
Joining the DePauw coaching staff felt like a natural fit. She quickly learned that its program had similar values to Aim back home.
“During the interview process, I felt the same camaraderie and drive I experienced at Aim,” she said. “The program’s values of discipline, accountability, respect, and trust align perfectly with my own.”
As a coach, Abby loves working with student-athletes who play simply for the love of the game. Something she learned wholeheartedly during her time with Aim.
“The student-athletes at the college level, Division III especially, are playing simply for the love of the game,” she said. “It takes a lot of hard work and it is special to help these student-athletes grow as much as they can while doing something they love. It’s also exciting to work on advanced skills and play with athletes who have been playing for a longer time.”
Reflecting on her time with Aim, Abby credits the club’s diverse coaching styles and supportive environment for helping her become the coach she is today.
“Aim challenged me to be my best,” she said. “I still think about those lessons from practices and games.”
Now, as Aim celebrates its 20th anniversary, Abby says she’s proud to be part of a program that continues to shape athletes — and people — for the better.
